DCW Tour Blog (post 10): Rock flavors.

I’m making certain observations about venues where we make music. It’s an art really, to run a venue. I think maybe the state of the venue says something about the attitude of those who run it toward the music that happens there and the patrons of the arts. Every place has it’s own appeal and aesthetic to be sure.

You have the do-it-yourself sort of underground venues that look like they haven’t been cleaned probably ever, which is totally rock because cleaning is not my favorite thing. What I love about these places is that they operate on a shoestring budget so that the music can go on and on for the kids who love it. Without this type of venue, music would be old, stale, and elite.

You have the weathered pro venues where everything is painted black partly for the dark underbelly contingent who lurk in the belly of the place and partly to be a blank slate for the music like a black box theater or something. These can be some of the most pro places in my experience and they might be clean too. I’ve even see toilet paper there and doors that lock to the bathroom.

There are so many kinds of places that you can’t list them all but finally, for the sake of this note, you have the kind of places that have a comfy, well lit green room with golden bloom chamomile tea, strawberries, lemon slices, and homey mugs. What I love about these places is that being comfy is totally rock. Without this type of venue, musicians would be weary, ragged, and of less sunny disposition.

Thank you rock venues.
